7 Damaging Power Gaps That Keep Professional Women From Reaching Their Highest Potential - Kathy Caprino
7 Damaging Power Gaps That Keep Professional Women From Reaching Their Highest Potential Some portion of Kathy Caprinos arrangement Accessing The Most Powerful You In the previous 15 years of instructing and preparing proficient ladies around the world, I've seen firsthand that a large number of ladies have gone through years building vocations they thought would fulfill them, just to wake up and acknowledge they are extremely distant from where they need to be, without a sign concerning what's in the way. Thousands are using extraordinary measures of vitality concealing the way that theyre terrified, miserable and disheartened, rearranging during each time attempting futile to construct a superior, more joyful expert life. Many have made some level of progress, yet they're as yet not flourishing in their work or in their jobs. Furthermore, they feel they're not where they ought to or could be as far as effect, duty, authority, or pay. My examination has uncovered that, while there are obviously quantities of basic institutional, hierarchical, social and cultural obstructions to extreme accomplishment for ladies today, most expert difficulties, are connected in some center path to an absence of interior or outside force that causes consistent spills in certainty, vision, and authority. These breaks influence womens capacity to make the progress important towards building a progressively legitimate and compensating proficient existence with the effect and satisfaction they long for. Ive made it my lifes work to assist ladies with shutting those force holes, for good. Ive found that while a few men experience these particular holes, they hit ladies harder and have more enduring negative impacts for ladies than for men. What's more, ladies process these holes uniquely in contrast to men. I allude to these difficulties as power holes since I consider them to be only that â" holes in our capacity that take from us what we need most to succeed: vitality, certainty, clearness, duty, association, and impact. The more drawn out the hole stays unaddressed, the more extensive it comes, and the more harm it does to our inside feeling of certainty and control. In an ongoing report, 98% of those studied showed that they are encountering in any event one of these holes, and 75% are confronting at least 3 simultaneously. The 7 most harming power holes I've encountered in my own life and seen in a great many expert ladies around the globe are: Force Gap #1: Not Recognizing Your Special Talents, Abilities and Accomplishments What you let yourself know: I'm not exceptional or skilled at all. A result to this hole: The impostor condition: I feel like an impostor for what I dont know and how I dont fit in here. Im apprehensive Ill be discovered and terminated. In looking into a great many reactions to my Career Path Self-Assessment study, Ive seen the quantity of ladies who basically cannot respond to this inquiry: What are my exceptional gifts and capacities, and how would I stand separated from others in my field? Actually over 90% of the expert and official ladies who go to an instructing or preparing program with me leave this inquiry clear and reveal to me that they have no clue about how to answer it. In the event that you cannot name your extraordinary capacities and gifts, at that point you cannot use them completely or viably adapt them. Furthermore, you wont flourish in your work. Further, the impostor condition that such a significant number of ladies live with today is an end product to this hole. At the point when we accept where it counts that well be discovered (criticized, rebuffed, dismissed or terminated, for instance) for what we DONT know, or what we accept or esteem that runs contrary to the natural order of things, at that point we live in dread. What's more, that dread keeps us from having the option to use what we DO know, and what were energetic about and put stock in. Force Gap #2: Communicating From Fear Not Strength What you let yourself know: I can't make some noise unhesitatingly or with power. An end product to this hole: It feels wrong to assume the acknowledgment, in any event, when I merit it. Ladies regularly battle with how to convey their achievements and capacities in an unmistakable, certain way. They dread theyll sound like theyre boasting or that theyre attempting to snatch a lot of the credit for the incredible results they delivered or bolstered. Our general public does to be sure have a clear sexual orientation bias when it comes to how we see intense, decisive ladies, however we have to address that through force, not shortcoming. Ive seen that such a large number of ladies were raised by guardians (at times good natured and some of the time not) who showed them not to be excessively flashy, not to show up excessively certain or to attempt to stick out. I had this in my own childhood the message that it was awkward for me to respect myself. Tragically, this is so harming to womens minds, and this message is something contrary to what numerous men are educated in their childhoods. On the off chance that you avoid talking compellingly about what youve done and accomplished, youll lose basic opportunities to guarantee new jobs, undertakings and openings that will develop your impact and effect. What's more, I promise you that a considerable lot of your male associates and contenders are not avoiding shouting out intensely about what theyve achieved. Force Gap #3: Reluctance to Ask For What You Deserve What you let yourself know: I believe I merit a raise and advancement, however I'm hesitant to ask and don't have the foggiest idea how. A conclusion to this hole: Do I genuinely merit more? Im not certain. Most of ladies I work with are frustrated concerning how to request a raise or advancement, or even how to decide the absolute initial step to making sense of what they ought to request. What's more, regardless of how much theyve cultivated, many don't know they have the right to be remunerated and perceived through higher pay and advancement. An intriguing examination study indicated that 57% of men directly out of their MBA program arranged their first very pay out of school, while just 7% of the ladies did as such. This makes a compensation disparity from the absolute initial phase in our professions. Without having faith in your value, realizing how to request what you merit, or building a solid case for it, youll rapidly fall behind your rivals and associates, and need to work years more than they never really get up to speed. Force Gap 4: Isolating From Influential Support What you let yourself know: I'm loathe organizing and associating with outsiders. It's so off-kilter and awkward. A conclusion to this hole: I have nothing essential to share or contribute. This year, as Ive expanded my focus on how contemplation versus extroversion is seen in our work environments, Ive began to follow the quantity of self observers who are requesting to join a lifelong instructing project or course with me. This year alone, over 75% of my customers and course individuals have self-detailed as thoughtful and shared their conviction that their inner-directedness is seen adversely by their managers and associates. They likewise feel that their introspection has impeded their systems administration and growing their range of prominence and association. In any case, numerous experts â" both contemplative and outgoing the same â" cant remain to network and feel its phony and awkward. Some portion of the issue is that numerous ladies can't perceive what theyve done as important or energizing, so they believe they don't have anything to share when theyre organizing or associating with others. I understood (subsequent to leaving my own corporate life and my VP job that squashed me) that the explanation I despised systems administration and battled to discuss my activity was triple: 1) I didnt associate at all with the real work I was doing, 2) I wasnt glad for the business results I was supporting, and 3) lastly, I was embarrassed about the kind of pioneer and director I believed I had to become in that job. That made systems administration and discussing my work with others extremely troublesome. At long last, its difficult to organize effectively when you despise what you do. Without building a ground-breaking bolster network that can enable you to develop, and without growing your system of associates past and current, youll seriously limit your entrance to energizing new chances and jobs. You have to discover at any rate one part of your work that you can feel eager to discuss. Force Gap 5: Acquiescing Instead of Saying STOP! What you let yourself know: It's so unreasonable what I'm experiencing, yet I can't challenge it. A conclusion to this hole: I dont have control or impact over what befalls me in my life. I normally address huge gatherings of ladies and when I request that participants lift their hands if theyve ever experienced or seen conduct that they feel is out of line, deceptive or more terrible, essentially all respondents hands shoot up in attestation, without fail. A large portion of us whove ever worked in an association for any measure of time have by and by saw conduct that made us profoundly awkward or apprehensive, and we returned home that late evening battling with how best to deal with it. A ongoing investigation revealed that 81% of ladies and 43% of men had encountered some type of inappropriate behavior during their lifetimes. In all actuality this: If you remain quiet despite uncalled for, deceptive or illicit conduct to you or to others around you youre adding to its commonness and continuation. What's more, undoubtedly, if youre a lady, youll be forced to bear it sooner or later and it wont end well. We have to guarantee more power and impact to oppose what is out of line, unscrupulous and vile and guarantee more control over what befalls us and around us. Force Gap 6: Losing Sight of Your Thrilling Dream What you let yourself know: I have no clue about what might make me more joyful or how I would even arrive. A conclusion to this hole: I fantasy about accomplishing something else, however theres simply no chance. Numerous ladies I get notification from comprehend what they dont want in their occupations and professions however cant name what they do need. That is a test that will keep you caught in a hopeless vocation or circumstance. On the off chance that you cannot name what you long for, or if youve dismissed a fantasy or vision that used to energize you, you wont gather the courage or capacity to make the vital changes

Use This Customizable Sales Cover Letter Template to Win the Job
Utilize This Customizable Sales Cover Letter Template to Win the Job Utilize This Customizable Sales Cover Letter Template to Win the Job Composing a solid introductory letter unquestionably improves the probability your business request for employment will get a reaction. Initially, it tells the recruiting director you're a decent communicator. You don't should be J.K. Rowling to exceed expectations in a business job, yet you do should be equipped for communicating your thoughts unmistakably, briefly and compellingly. Second, it shows you're put resources into the chance. Since online employment entrances make it so natural to apply, postings can get many reactions. An elegantly composed, energetic introductory letter isolates you from all the individuals basically shooting their resume out. Third, it allows you to add some shading to your application. Possibly you're not as experienced as they'd like, or you're inexperienced with the business, or you've never utilized their business tech stack. Your introductory letter causes you give subtleties past your resume - which can regularly represent any missing capabilities. Persuaded? Uplifting news: It's really not that difficult to compose a viable, even smooth introductory letter for a business work, if you have the correct assets. In case you're applying to a moderate organization or work in a proper industry (think fund, social insurance or law), incorporate a full heading: Your name and address, trailed by a space, the date, trailed by another space, and the organization name and address. Be that as it may, in case you're applying to a less conventional spot (like HubSpot !), essentially compose your name and email address, trailed by a space, and the organization name and email address. Possibly you don't know who will peruse your introductory letter. Be that as it may, don't write To the responsible party in question, Dear employing supervisor or some other nonexclusive title. With a little examination , you can without much of a stretch discover the employing chief's name. You'll get focuses regardless of whether you're off-base. Suppose you're applying for the SMB Account Executive job at Joyfull. Google SMB project supervisor Joyfull and check whether you can discover the group's chief on LinkedIn. When applying to a moderate organization, write Dear Mr./Ms. [Last name]. When applying to a startup or moderately loosened up association, write Dear [First name] [Last name]. Your introduction passage should feature why you're an incredible fit. It's an elevated level outline, instead of a total diagram of your work history and capabilities, so hold it under four sentences. The standard introductory letter opening line is something along the lines of: I'm keen on turning into a salesman on your SMB team or I'm energized for the chance to apply for the SMB salesperson job. While these sentences probably won't execute your odds of landing the position, they unquestionably don't help. You need to catch the peruser's eye and sell yourself from the very beginning. Considering that, compose a customized, convincing line that will attract the recruiting chief and make them need to understand more. I love working with independent ventures - truth be told, I've helped more than 300 in the previous year at my present place of employment - which is the reason I'm so amped up for the opportunity to help SMBs find Joyfull. Consistently, I compose a blog entry about a typical SMB challenge. Aiding SMBs conquer this hindrance isn't simply fulfilling - it's additionally an incredible lead gen methodology. My enthusiasm for this kind of work drove me to your SMB Account Executive position. Do you know a current or previous representative who talks decidedly about the organization? Notice that in your introduction. In a perfect world, they'd allude you (either by presenting your application or interfacing you with the recruiting director), yet in the event that they're not a nearby enough reach, you can in any case utilize their name. As a self-starter who flourishes in self-ruling, results-situated conditions, I'm attracted to the BDR job at Red Shelf. I've heard extraordinary things about the way of life and taking in circumstances from Sarah Grossman, who began as a BDR and now chips away at your L&D group. In this section, pick an applicable work experience . What does significant mean? You're attempting to show your current capacities and information map well to the job you're applying for, so on the off chance that you right now work in retail and you need to turn into a business advancement rep, you may compose: As a story partner for Wilson and Co., I help 60 or more clients consistently with inquiries regarding brands, fit, quality and that's just the beginning. This experience has shown me how to give a positive client encounter and be useful while driving deals - the two aptitudes I'd use as a HubSpot BDR. At last, it's made me open to moving toward outsiders and going about as an item master, which would be significant when contacting inbound leads. The subsequent body section follows a similar structure as the first. Take another pertinent work or instructive experience, and come to an obvious conclusion to the job you're applying for. Envision you're right now an AE going after a director job . Your subsequent segment could peruse: In the previous 16 months on the Pacific West group, I've accepted a few open doors to develop my initiative capacities. I began a mentorship program for new reps, blending them with sales reps who have been at the organization for at any rate two years. This program has been an immense achievement: Half-year maintenance is 20 percent higher for members versus those without guides, and one of our lesser reps even composed a blog entry about it⦠which wound up producing 10 candidates. I additionally started a Wednesday night call survey. Everybody is welcome - we typically get around nine individuals. As a team lead, I'd keep on searching for approaches to help, coach and train my sales reps so they approach the most ebb and flow and valuable assets conceivable. On the off chance that you have another pertinent experience, examine it here. Be that as it may, don't include a third section only for including one - a shorter introductory letter is better if it's progressively important. How about we guess you're applying for a business engineer job, which is a profoundly specialized and requesting work that possible warrants a three-section introductory letter: In the wake of going through two years in client service, I'm in my component while responding to item related inquiries. There's nothing I appreciate more than getting a difficult ticket I can delve into - and there's nothing more fulfilling than at last comprehending it. As a business engineer for HubSpot, I'd find the opportunity to converse with clients about the item every day and answer their most unpredictable inquiries. What's more, I could utilize the relational abilities I've sharpened as a help rep. This segment shouldn't be long or fancy. Numerous individuals end with superfluous articulations like, Please let me know whether I can give any more information or Thank you for your consideration. The issue with these? An employing director can securely expect you'll give more information whenever solicited and are grateful from their time. You'll appear as though every other candidate who's snatched a conventional format from the web (which, alright, you may be doing, however they don't have to realize that.) Rather, repeat your enthusiasm with a solid rundown line like: The greatest days at work are normally the longest and generally requesting - in light of the fact that I return home realizing I've helped numerous proprietors drastically change the course of their organizations. Your hyper-faithful client base recommends being a Joyfull AE accompanies significantly more chances to support youthful and developing associations. The more I found out about [company's] mission to [insert mission here, for example improve the remote working experience, make individual account simple), the more energized I became. Why It Is A Good Idea To Hire A Lawyer Resume Writing Service
Why It Is A Good Idea To Hire A Lawyer Resume Writing ServiceThere are lawyers who have grown tired of the daily grind that takes them from courtroom to courtroom. It is not unusual for them to go on leave to travel, or even timeshare away from the law. The most successful lawyers generally have solid networks of other lawyers, they trust to handle most of their legal affairs. When a lawyer takes a long, temporary vacation, he needs a way to keep his clients informed about his whereabouts.Law firms can help by keeping lawyers informed about their whereabouts. Even when the law firm is located in an entirely different state or country, it is still important to notify clients about the absence of the lawyer. Most people find it easier to contact a person when they know where the person lives. However, there may be certain circumstances that require the presence of a lawyer to comply with local laws. Some states have laws prohibiting what one can do while they are out of town. A law firm can provide a lawyer resume writing service that updates clients when a lawyer is on vacation, and how long the lawyer is absent. The law firm will also inform clients about the lawyer's absence. One may consider giving a lawyer's work to another firm while he is on vacation. A lawyer may consider this practice as a free service and therefore be willing to take on work from other firms.Lawyers should be aware that in many states, no one can solicit or even demand money from a lawyer while the lawyer is on vacation. Therefore, the lawyer resume writing service should not provide written work while the lawyer is on vacation. A lawyer may want to consider having the law firm post notices that suggest the lawyer is on vacation to avoid any potential consequences.A lawyer may wish to be more specific about the types of services he provides during his vacation. For example, a law firm that offers content editing, proofreading, and formatting should be clear about exactly what type of serv ice the firm offers. Many people will be amazed at the amount of money law firms charge for such services. If a lawyer is unable to provide the law firm with updated information about when he will be on vacation, the law firm will have to contact him. In most cases, the client will not be willing to pay the attorney a retainer for the purpose of hiring another lawyer. However, if the lawyer cannot make up for the cost of a lawyer resume writing service, the client may be willing to pay for the service.Sometimes it is appropriate for a law firm to use a lawyer resume writing service. However, a lawyer must ensure that he retains control over the records of when he leaves town. A lawyer should only provide such services when he has communicated clearly to clients that he will be out of town, and any updated information must be provided to the client at that time.

Social Media Job Consequences Get College Students Attention - Workology
Social Media Job Consequences Get College Students Attention REAL EMPLOYMENT CONSEQUENCES In a recent post here at Blogging4Jobs, I asked for your best advice to college students on managing their social media. I got good feedback from recruiters and others on the need for students to realize that what they post online today will greatly affect their future employment opportunities. My presentation a few days later to some 150 students at The Ohio State University went very well. The students were very engaged, despite the fact that I was the only person standing between them and Spring Break. (They inspired me to write about spring break tips for students to manage their reputations.) REAL EMPLOYMENT CONSEQUENCES The key to the studentsâ engagement, perhaps no surprise, is that I focused on the very real consequence for their employment. In the beginning, I asked how many were currently seeking a job. About a third raised their hands. Then I asked how many would be looking in a year, two or three, which raised most hands. To that I showed a slide with â91%â on it. That, I told them, is the percentage of employers who, in a 2011 study by Reppler.com, said that they used social media in screening job candidates. GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS I told them there was good news and bad news from this study. The bad news is that 69% said they rejected a candidate based on social media findings. The good news is that 68% said theyâd hired a candidate based on social profiles. (The same employers might have rejected or accepted candidates.) I asked the students to guess the reasons in each category and they did well. For rejection, it was inappropriate photos and posts, discriminatory remarks and poor communications skills, among others. For accepting applicants, the reasons were, among others, presenting a well-rounded person, showing a positive personality and qualifications and strong communication skills. CLEAN UP ONLINE IDENTITY This seemed to gain their undivided attention for the rest of the program, which focused on specific online strategies for cleaning up their pasts, safeguarding their current and managing their future posts. When I finished and dismissed them, I offered to answer questions. The majority stayed and asked strong questions. I had given the students a Twitter hash tag to use and their Tweets reflected an understanding of the importance of their online reputations, which was pleasing. Given that it was almost Spring Break, my favorite Tweet was from a woman who said she was âGlad she showed up for class.â Now, I hope they put my advice to use and begin to seriously manage their online identities.

Uber 3 management lessons we can learn from the scandal
Uber 3 administration exercises we can gain from the outrage Uber 3 administration exercises we can gain from the embarrassment On Tuesday, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick declared an uncertain time away around the same time his company discharged the proposals of an inward examination concerning its working environment culture, particularly around its treatment of women. The organization began the examination after a previous specialist at Uber, Susan Fowler, asserted lewd behavior, separation - and a HR division that overlooked these claims.Kalanick, 40, has gained notoriety for brash leadership and congested terrible kid conduct including nicknaming the organization Boober for how it supported his dating life. The organization has been seeing how Kalanick's conduct tends to stream down to different officials, and subsequently he had been working with an official mentor and taking up contemplation before he went on leave this present week.Kalanick's stamp on Uber is unavoidable, showing the intensity of an official's way to deal with structure the way of life of an organization. Uber is just about a $70 billion org anization, and it arrived through Kalanick's administration style of not letting anything-legal claims over work rehearses for drivers, God see observation of its clients' private information, rehashed lewd behavior charges by its officials, and government guidelines disrupt the general flow of the organization's growth. Now, the organization is paying for it. Here are three exercises we can figure out how we can utilize Uber as a contextual analysis on avoidable mismanagement.1. Make esteems you can be pleased with and satisfy themUber had a lot of qualities. Tragically, they were really forceful and boosted workers to treat each other gravely in the quest for their very own prosperity. These grating sayings enlivened representatives to act with impunity.Among those qualities, which sound ready for struggle: Let Builders Build, Consistently Be Hustlin', Meritocracy and Toe-Stepping, and Principled Confrontation. One of the proposals from the Eric Holder-drove examination was to dispe nse with those qualities which have been recognized as excess or as having been utilized to legitimize poor behavior. It's not surprising that under the work environment culture of Meritocracy and Toe-Stepping, a top Uber official would feel constrained to acquire and keep the clinical records of a Uber driver's assault casualty he accepted may be lying. That official was among the many individuals the organization fired after the law office's examination revealed different cases of lewd behavior, reprisal and amateurish behavior. What's noteworthy about that: the high number of individuals being accounted for and terminated shows that this poisonous work culture was encouraged and empowered by Uber's forceful culture. And for the nice individuals that stay at Uber, working in this condition despite everything influences their current state of mind and future business openings. New York Times' correspondent Mike Isaac said employing supervisors were careful about recruiting individuals who worked at Uber after the scandals. It's an update that even when you're not legitimately adding to its harmfulness, a bad workplace culture still straightforwardly impacts you. likewise am being told many individuals are stopping every week within Uber. steady loss is getting to them. - rodent ruler (@MikeIsaac) June 13, 20172. Tune in to your representatives' interests early and oftenThis cerebral pain of an inside examination could have been maintained a strategic distance from if the executives had tuned in to Fowler's interests sooner. She adhered to the correct procedures to be heard and said she was excused and disregarded. At the point when she revealed a representative who was compelling her to have intercourse with him, she was told by HR that they wouldn't do anything since he was a high performer. To fix this behavior, Uber would need to change how it treats reactions and protests. It would need to make an enabling domain where representatives like Fowler could step forward without fear. Now Uber needs to make that culture in any case - yet in a truly debilitated position they could have maintained a strategic distance from in the event that they had quite recently tuned in any case. Uber's answer: The inside examination suggested actualizing a powerful a nd compelling protest process that would incorporate numerous roads for housing a grievance, including a representative's prompt administrator or next-level supervisor, the association's Human Resources Business Partner, or the Integrity Helpline.3. Have zero resilience for bad conduct, especially at the topCreating zero-resistance arrangements for badgering and discrimination is an essential HR practice that ought to be sufficiently simple to follow, and it was what the examination recommended. But as one Uber board part appeared, practices don't change overnight. In the prompt consequence of the proposals being discharged, board part Arianna Huffington talked about what Uber approaches could be changed before workers. At the point when she said that including increasingly female board individuals prompts more ladies joining sheets, her individual board part David Bonderman reacted with a misogynist comment: Really, what it demonstrates is that it's significantly more prone to be mor e talking.Bonderman left the board hours after sound of the trade had been spilled. The speedy reaction to his comments shows that post-examination, senior authority will be considered progressively responsible out in the open. That is something beneficial for Uber, in spite of the fact that Kalanick despite everything remains CEO. In spite of the fact that Kalanick himself was not prescribed to leave, the examination finished up that Uber ought to diminish his responsibilities.Overall, the proposals are a wake up call of what happens when you let originators and superior workers pull off terrible conduct for a really long time. With the arrival of its suggestion, Uber is flagging that it will change. The truth will surface eventually if these composed guarantees will prompt action. For now, tidying up your act means cleaning house.

Should I Follow My Heart Or My Head
âShould I Follow My Heart Or My Headâ Help from our Community âShould I Follow My Heart Or My Head?â * Felix has reached a turning point in her career. Her heart tells her to chase her passion unreservedly; her head tells her it's not realistic. When you're being pulled in different directions, how do you decide which voice to follow? What's your career history and current job? I do copywriting for a web design agency. I write for mostly industrial clients, from construction to retail to aerospace, writing product reviews and descriptions, basically almost anything they ask for. I've been doing that for a year. Previously I worked in advertising. How do you feel about your work? I picked this because it was lucrative, stable and something to do with one of my passions in which I have a degree, writing. Originally I had wanted to pursue illustration and animation in school, but I was feeling the weight of both cultural expectation and some family obligation to do more of a professional, full-time role, and so I changed my plan. When I started the job I was quite excited because it involved writing but it's become less and less creative. My company tend to throw a lot of the technical writing at me, which I don't find satisfying. I prefer coming up with new ideas, strategising and developing content pieces, but I don't get to do much of that. I don't enjoy the business end of things and I'm sick of the overflowing work. It also gets demoralising when clients think they know better than me. I'm tired of feeling constantly drained by the 9â"6 corporate life. I feel like a fraud pretending to be passionate about social media content trends. I don't want to still be in the corporate world in ten years' time. What would you like to be doing instead? I want to do something I can dedicate my life to mastering. Something where I can learn a skill and connect to audiences in a meaningful way, doing something that genuinely interests me. My number one choice of career would be illustration and animation, but I'm not sure how viable it would be in terms of time or money. I've done some online research and looked at courses. I've spoken to a course counsellor and, from what I've found, online freelance work is hard to come by in this field. I feel that I have two choices. The one I really want â" illustration and animation â" may not lead to a stable job or even a job at all! The other choice is to develop a portfolio career using my hobbies and my writing skills. What's the biggest obstacle in your way? I feel pulled in two different directions. Should I follow my main passion for illustration straight away because it's what I want more? Or should I start a portfolio career now, with a junior role in animation where there are more opportunities? That way, I could at least earn a bit of money and so study illustration on the side. I can't decide what's best; I feel like I'm delaying what I really want to do and wasting my time. My heart says to just go after what I really want, now, but my head warns that I'm being blinded by the idea of instant gratification. What should I do? Can you help Felix? Have you been in a similar situation, or are you in the same boat right now? How do you think Felix could move her shift forwards? Do you know anyone she could talk to? Share your thoughts in the comments below and click the thumbs-up button to show your support. Give Felix a cheer of encouragement by hitting the thumbs-up button here:

The Art of Assertiveness
The Art of Assertiveness As humans, we are uniquely social creatures. Much of our lives are built around the relationships and communications we have with others. And the artful use of assertiveness is critical to those relationships and communications. It allows those interactions to blossom while supporting us and our own needs. Heres how to master it. Understanding Artful Assertiveness In The Assertiveness Guide For Women, author Julie De Azevedo Hanks defines assertiveness as a way of communicating that is clear, confident, and self-assured. It enables you to express your thoughts, feelings, needs, and wants without infringing on the rights of others. At its core, assertiveness is about the courage to express difference. Her book is an outstanding read, by the way. Its set to be released about August 1, so mark your calendar and pick up a copy, and a new highlighter, because youll have lots to highlight. So assertiveness isnt about control or bullying. Its about honoring yourself while also honoring those around you. In order to accomplish that, its important that compassion and calmness prevail. And a key ingredient to achieving that is through the use of curiosity. Because by remaining curious, its easier to evaluate the position of the other seeking to understand rather than forming judgments. Calmness Mindfulness is a buzzword we hear frequently. To a large extent, its about maintaining a state of calmness. In our hurried society, we receive a ton of information to process. Doing so as more of an observer than a participant allows you to remain calm and deflect conflict. The elements of mindfulness can be found in meditation, yoga, and other similar practices. And there are many resources both in print and online to help you learn those techniques. But one easy to remember technique that can be practiced anywhere at any time is controlled breathing. We all know that we have to breathe to live. Our body requires oxygen. And the physical and chemical effects of proper breathing can be huge. Oddly enough, few of us are conscious of how we breathe. Pay attention to your breathing patterns. Take deep breaths, and slow your breathing down. Youll find it more calming than you might think. Compassion And Curiosity In our rush to do life, to get through another day, we frequently let our subconscious mind do a little more than is wise. We mindlessly categorize things, people, and events without much if any thought. But in doing so it becomes easy to accept that our label is correct. And then we react with a mindset of rightness about our opinion. From there, we can find ourselves on the slippery slope of insisting that our way or view is best. Rather than doing life in that way, pay attention. As you go through lifes experiences, add an element of curiosity. Whats it like from the other persons perspective? Then add some compassion. How would I feel in their position? Surprisingly, having that level of empathy is actually empowering. Theres no longer an adversarial pall in the air. Youre much more able to calmly hold, assertively hold, your position because you have a clearer understanding of theirs. I recently read Living Curiously by Becki Saltzman. Its a great read to expand on the benefits of curiosity. Coupled with The Assertiveness Guide, youll find a powerful course for doing life in a whole new way. One that honors yourself, and honors the other side. For me, learning to become artfully assertive has created a new level of inner peace. And we can all use more of that.
